February 2021 is upon us, and drumroll please… Its time to update the General Vestry list for the upcoming year!
I trust you are as excited as I am!
What is the General Vestryperson List?
The General Vestryperson list is a poorly named membership list of St. Luke’s Mullaglass Church. Its designed to record all adult members of our church. It isn’t the Select Vestry, thats a completely different body. Rather its the offical membership list of the congregation.
Why should I join?
If you consider yourself to be a member of Mullaglass Church, then I would recommend making sure your name is down on the official list. It grants you certain privileges and “perks” such as the ability, (if wanted) to attend the Annual Easter Vestry, and the ability (if wanted) to put yourself forward for the Select Vestry.
Am I eligible?
There are three criteria for obtaining membership of Mullaglass Church;
- Aged 18 years or older. (Not normally an issue in the Church of Ireland)
- Belong to the Parish, or be an accustomed member of the Parish (I.e. Live near the church, or live away from the church but attend anyway)
- Contribute meaningfully to Church Funds.
Essentially membership is open and encouraged to all adults of the parish. Gone are the days when just the husband would be registered, the arcane and rather confusing style of recording women as, for example, Mrs Jim Irwin are long gone.
Everyone is equal and everyone has the right to be a full member of our church, as long as they meet the criteria above.
What does Contributing meaningfully to Church Funds mean?
Well according to the most recent copy of the rules I have from the Church of Ireland, it means to contribute half a crown annually to the church funds. Unfortunately those rules are from 1913. Lets say over £5 new pounds annually. Essentially as love as you have contributed something to the Church then you’re good to go.
I am now as excited as you are
Brilliant news! First you can get into contact with me, Mark Irwin either by email, or contact me over on WhatsApp to find out if you are already on the list.
If you aren’t, getting on the list is as easy as filling out one of the two forms. One is for members who live in the Parish (residents), and one is for Accustomed members, i.e. those who live outside the Parish Boundaries.
What are the Parish Boundaries?
Another fine question. One which I don’t know. As far as i’m aware parish boundaries haven’t been mapped and updated for hundreds of years, with the Parish boundaries of Killeavy including our church, as well as Bessbrook and Drumbanagher and potentially Loughgilly.
We’ll judge it on whether there is another Church of Ireland closer to you or not. So for me, living in Belfast I am an accustomed member of the Parish. For the home place in Glasdrummond, on the Armagh Road, I would be a Resident of the Parish.
But generally speaking if you’re from areas such as Cloghinny, Craigmore, Derrywilligan, Glasdrummond, Goraghwood, Latt, Milvale, Mullaglass, Searce or Tullyhappy then you are a resident of Mullaglass Church. If you’re outside this area then you are an accustomed member.
If you aren’t already on the list, simply download the correct form below, fill it in and either email it to me or post it back to me. Ideally before Friday 26th February 2021.
The deadline is the end of the Month to get all new names added.
